“We are stronger than we think” – Nayana Nair

“We are stronger than we think.”
I always avoid saying such nonsense.
I have always hated words
that have no meaning ,
no real sympathy,
words that almost sound like:
“shut up! stop crying! we have had enough.
don’t make the atmosphere so depressing.
we can’t help it.
you can’t either.
why bring up such topics.”
I never wanted to sound like that to anyone.
I don’t want to be one of those who
consider consoling someone
equal to convincing them
that what they considered precious,
what they considered life shattering
was nothing,
that what the grieving cares for is nothing.

But then, what are the right words?

“We are stronger than we think.”
To spew such nonsense.
Even when I said that to her,
I wondered why I said that.
Have I been surprised
by my strength ever in my life?
Probably not.

But I remember feeling
that my happiest days have walked past me,
when I realized the futility of life, of my life,
my insignificance.
And how I somehow made it to the days
where I found something to look forward to,
where I found myself between people whom I could love.
The fact
that I could wait for such days
in spite of the misery that was once unbearable
must mean something.
To wait for something that may never arrive
must require some kind of strength.
To loose every paradise we stumble on,
to bleed every time it is lost
and to still believe in the concept of paradise
must require something more
than the strength we think we have.

About Nayana Nair

Hi, I am Nayana Nair. I'm 25. Just a crazy girl who has tons of things to talk about....not much organized thoughts sadly. I like to talk about everything...mostly..every conversation of mine turns into a monologue.... So I decided I should start writing a blog..rather than chat.... I'm very much passionate about music, psychology and literature.... Moderate interest in science..... I always want to be a writer (and also a teacher)..But I don't think I have the skills required...this blog is just my attempt at becoming the writer I always wanted to be...Blogging for few years, I have realized I am more of a poet (although, I am not sure that I am good enough for that label)...I hope I realize more about myself through writing. Thanks for dropping by!! Hope I didn't disappoint. :)

  1. We are stronger than we think…Yes we are! And we can always become stronger and stronger each day, it’s just a decision…but in the middle of sadness and depression, probably we just need a hug, someone to just hold us without saying a single word, because each advice a person will give us, we will reject it! But it doesn’t mean this advice is wrong…and eventually we will discover that being strong is the only option we have! Life will not stop, it will move forward as we should do…and each pain, each single tear we drop teach us how strong we are and how strong we grow everyday…
    It’s Beautifully written 🙂

    • I totally agree with you. Though things can go wrong and we may find ourselves surrounded with sadness. But the presence and support of people who genuinely care for our well being, can make a lot of difference.
Really glad that you liked my work 🙂
      Thank you 😀

      • Yes this is what I said, we do need their support but sometimes without saying a word 🙂 because each advice they will say while we’re extremely depressed might look as you were describing in you poem “nonsense” “I don’t want to be one of those who consider consoling someone equal to convincing them”
But of course we need their support and eventually these words of support will help us..because we know they’re true 🙂
Yes, appreciate your work, you are very talented 🙂 Keep it up!

  2. I liked this.

  3. For sure there’s strength in your words…

  4. Reblogged this on Mirror Gate and commented:
There’s nothing better than trying to be strong in order to protect what you believe in.

  5. I love how the colour changes throughout the poem match the picture you chose! Beautiful.

  6. I like everything about this poem, the tone, the structure, the message. We’ve both been on the giving and receiving end of words which we deem not enough or insensitive, but we continue to use them because, ultimately, all we have are words like “we are stronger than we know.” And sometimes those words are more comforting than an uncomfortable silence or a simple hug.

    • I totally agree with you on that. Though we realize from our own experience that sometimes words are not enough, but that is maybe all we have.
Really glad that you liked my work
Thank you 😀 Means a lot

  7. Beautifully written.
    “must require something more
than the strength we think we have”….Love? Maybe?

  8. I agree my friend. Look at world history. People can overcome hard life and hard things. We are tougher than we know.

  9. Its so much true that we are more stronger than we think..

( Albert Einstein )
