“Greater Good” – Nayana Nair

Posted on

The trees are alive today.
They ask me to sing them to sleep for the last time.
I sing for hours
but they refuse to close their eyes.

They ask me how I have been,
not waiting for my answer,
in one breath they ask
about the words they don’t understand,
ask me about the days I do not remember anything about
(there are so many days I have no memory of
while I can’t forget the days I really want to forget),
about the rain that has left us long ago.

Their love for this world that they do not understand-
makes me jealous,
makes me wonder,
if I could love also this world as much as I want to
if I knew a little less,
if I gave up this human heart
that knows nothing but to steal and plead,
to take away and bleed.
But if I knew how to give up myself
for my greater good,
I would have done so long ago.

I can only stay selfish,
act better than what I am,
sing songs to the trees
that will soon be killed for my sake.

About Nayana Nair

Hi, I am Nayana Nair. I'm 25. Just a crazy girl who has tons of things to talk about....not much organized thoughts sadly. I like to talk about everything...mostly..every conversation of mine turns into a monologue.... So I decided I should start writing a blog..rather than chat.... I'm very much passionate about music, psychology and literature.... Moderate interest in science..... I always want to be a writer (and also a teacher)..But I don't think I have the skills required...this blog is just my attempt at becoming the writer I always wanted to be...Blogging for few years, I have realized I am more of a poet (although, I am not sure that I am good enough for that label)...I hope I realize more about myself through writing. Thanks for dropping by!! Hope I didn't disappoint. :)

  1. simply outstanding, deeply moving. I love it when I connect so with poetry, it is like popular music, one thinks wow, that is like it came from my own heart. See how that shows your writing is bigger than you, and that you are very big too. Thanks for existing, these moments are the most precious to me these days. Peace and love.

    • Thank you so much for such kind words πŸ™‚ Means a lot to me. πŸ™‚
I am really glad that my poem could make you feel that way. Will do my best to write better poems in future as well.
      Thanks a lot πŸ™‚
      Peace and love.

  2. A Greater Good that must not happen.
But your concern for the trees is much Greater than the Great.
    Your feelings so finely expressed.
    My Pats!

  3. Ah I feel the same tug at my own values when I enjoy nature!

  4. When we explore our love for nature then we can discover a lot about ourselves. To watch a tree go through an annual cycle, to see the butterfly as the beautiful end to a cycle, to marvel at patterns on leaves. Then I look at how creatures can live at peace with each other, how they share whether it be a forest or a sea, then I know we can learn so much from such as trees. Nice thoughts in your poem πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  5. Nature gives us all its love in a disinterested way and we pay badly for it. Your poem is a cry of pure poetry at the service of the greenery of the forests that give us life. An excellent poem that the struggle to preserve the environment can reach many people.

    • True. Although we have been given so much by mother nature, all we do is hurt it back. We are not so helpless as we act to be, it is just that we don’t want to give up the luxuries that we get at the expense of ruining this world. But there are so many people who recognize that and work hard to preserve nature. The world is a better place because of them. πŸ™‚
Really glad that you liked my poem.
Thank you so much πŸ™‚ πŸ˜€

  6. Moving poem. I write a lot of poetry about nature in fact I wrote whole book on nature and creation.
