“Save Yourself” – Nayana Nair

Posted on

when i looked into you
i saw all the stories,
all the words, all the songs,
all the things that make love appear
more noble than it is.

*

and though i wanted to mock it,
to ridicule your hopes,
to tell you sad tragic tales
that would make break your heart,
make you see clearer.
but I couldn’t.

*

so, take your innocence with you.
keep it close to yourself,
for as long as possible.
try to live the life
that we all have failed to live.

About Nayana Nair

Hi, I am Nayana Nair. I'm 25. Just a crazy girl who has tons of things to talk about....not much organized thoughts sadly. I like to talk about everything...mostly..every conversation of mine turns into a monologue.... So I decided I should start writing a blog..rather than chat.... I'm very much passionate about music, psychology and literature.... Moderate interest in science..... I always want to be a writer (and also a teacher)..But I don't think I have the skills required...this blog is just my attempt at becoming the writer I always wanted to be...Blogging for few years, I have realized I am more of a poet (although, I am not sure that I am good enough for that label)...I hope I realize more about myself through writing. Thanks for dropping by!! Hope I didn't disappoint. :)

  2. Interesting thoughts expressed here, maybe when you find love then you will consider whether to mock. I don’t know, it depends upon how you see love. If love is perceived as something that we share with each other then there is not a reason to mock. If one indulges only in taking, or the other side does not want to truly give then we have this lop-sided situation where there is no balance in the relationship. I’d better stop, I sound like an agony aunt. Thanks for putting up another thought-provoking poem, I do so enjoy them 🙂 🙂

    • I agree with you that love in its truest sense is not something to be mocked. But it happens so many times that we have expectations of what love is and should be even before we find it. And it is mostly a very rosy picture. More often the case is not so in reality. When one does find a love that is not what one expected. Love does turn ugly. Because we are flawed people, our love also turns to be flawed. We ourselves can’t truly love another person unconditionally, but we still want to be loved like that. So once you realize that, you will obviously lose your trust in the theoretical love. And after our own experience like this, if someone in front of us lives believing in this rosy view of love, we have the urge to tell them that it is not so. (for example, all the people who do mock the love stories that are too cheesy in their words). But what I wanted to say was that even when someone is pursuing this pure love, that never existed for us. We should not make them feel small for believing in something so pure. Even though the ideal love seems impossible to exist, we can always keep it as an ideal to work towards. Only because we couldn’t have the ideal, doesn’t mean we should discourage anyone who tries to achieve it. 🙂
I am really glad that you liked my work 🙂 I am always delighted to read your views on my poems.
      Thanks a lot 🙂 😀

  4. I liked the poem, Nayana, and found it poignant. Thank you for sharing it.

For the record, I usually leave innocence alone, though I disapprove of myself for doing so. Innocence too often gets into trouble. Twenty-six years ago, an employee of mine was murdered by her possessive boyfriend. She had only recently gotten involved with him. I tried to warn her about him, but she had her head full of syrupy ideas about love, and she misinterpreted his possessiveness as genuine love for her.

I think the humane thing to do is to help innocent people see the truth. Unfortunately, that doesn’t often work. People can be very attached to their notions of love.

    • I agree with you. There is truth and then there is something we want to believe in. Most often people don’t want the truth.
Love holds different meaning for everyone. And I don’t think helping innocent see the truth works that much because of that. I have seen that sometimes people are so broken that they want love in any form. They have lived a life we don’t know of, I can only know of the situation at it’s face value.
I have seen people stay in relationship that are abusive for the sake of the times they felt valued and felt they were given attention and care. Because that was something the world didn’t give them. We are all weak in one form or other. So, nothing I can say to a person who I might see to be walking towards trouble would be accurate. I think such objective suggestion of choices can be said only because we don’t have enough information and because we are not living through it. I might sound cold, but I am saying this from my experience- that taking the most obvious decision, see the most obvious is sometimes the most difficult.
I think we all want to live our lives, on our own terms even however flawed that might be. But sometimes things turn tragic because of that.
I am sad to hear that things turned out this bad for your employee. May her soul rest in peace.
I am glad that you liked my work 🙂
      Thanks a lot 🙂

( Albert Einstein )
