“Once, my heart…”- Nayana Nair

.

They set me down softly.
The cloth made of stars and leaves,
laid to rest on my heart.
My heart, once a gaping hungry mouth,
a volcano ready to freeze
all life, all skin that roam and breathe
within its realm. The tyrant helpless ruler
of the subjects that bleed in their sleep
as they murmur their pleas, reciting memories
it can’t bear to listen to.
My heart,
a café lit with dying songs and cheap menu,
a landscape of wrecks well-hidden.
My heart, a sceptic, now sits in a structure of wood,
with its half-written paper
on “questionable power of blood”
sprawled on its desk,
while it waits for the final burning
wearing that one warm worn-down love,
that somehow still breathes.

“Cutouts of Star Factories” – Nayana Nair

Though the sky is filled with lights
the nights on this land are lonely as ever.
Again I am in love
with a part of sky,
with things that we call heavenly
only because they are out of our reach,
only because they are not ours to keep,
because every god seems to love them more.

I end up on websites or with books that say
“this is how the universe looks”
“this how the stars are born”
“this is the most beautiful cloud you will ever know”
“this is something your tearful eyes can never see”.
That for every drop of light
there are an expanse of emptiness
which we cannot imagine.
That we are small and we are insignificant.

Funny how the love for things
that I thought couldn’t possibly hurt me
also takes me down the same path.
The path that I walked once
holding the hands of someone
made of flesh plastered with signs
of caution and warnings.

But it is different now.
I guess the difference lies in who tells this news to me.
If I am nothing, if this hurt that I feel because of you
is of minor importance,
if I have a life that will be easily forgotten,
then I do not have to kill myself only to be remembered well.
And maybe,
just maybe
I can forgive you for being human
and myself for not being humane enough.

“Receding Waves” – Nayana Nair

The thought of you
walking down to me
and speaking to me as if speaking to a child,
as if speaking to one with disability of understanding only your words.
It brings me to an ocean of receding waves and words
where we could have walked every morning,
we could have found a way to love our water bodies
without waiting for it become tears.

~~~
But you keep coming to me.
One step
~we could think of all names and fates we could have had instead~
Two step
~we could play a game of guessing the memories that ruined us for each other~
Almost near my shaking hands
asking me to stop.
To stop thinking of these painful scenarios
~painful?~
To stop ignoring the one who is asking his leave
~where?~
~~~

I wish I could no longer hear you voice.
I wish I stopped hurting.
I wish my stars would hurry up
and bring me the death they promised long ago.
~all along i thought it was you~

~~~
I wish I could continue this dream with someone else
and never notice the one who walks beside me
loves me too much to be you.
“Wish” – Nayana Nair
The stars that crumbled
at the wind of your wish,
have their light taken say for your sake.
In their dying light they take your name.
Even if the wish comes to life
it is heavy with a sadness, a grief.
For they are just dying breath
with promises to keep.
“Frail Thread” – Nayana Nair
tumblr_static_tumblr_static_4bgcgmy3u6asw8sc4kcogk40o_640
These lines that
connect to my heart,
pass through landscapes
devoid of human presence.
This frail thread
passes through valley of flowers
that have no color.
Through balconies overlooking
desolate streets and
sky crowded with stars.
Through stairs leading to floors
that no one visits.
Through the branches of old trees
broken in the storms.
Through abandoned toys in locked rooms
with no owners.
Through the warm sheets
where I rest with my dreams.
and bring loneliness of the world
that lies beside me,
while I wonder
why do I feel so hollow inside.
“ANTS”- Nayana Nair
roof-at-night-with-skyline
As you all walked
To your homes, to your love
To where the crowd takes you.
With love and hatred
And worries in your minds.
With life still in your veins.
I sat there, up above,
Looking down at you,
Oblivious of me, of him.
Of the knots that tightened
Around his neck each second.
While he saw everyone, even himself
Wrenching away from his grasp
The only life he would ever have.
I looked at him beside me
And looked at you down below.
And wondered whether anyone of you
Will remember his face,
Will know his life.
Maybe your hostile glance
Was the last nail that
Broke open his heart.
Someone like you planted that seed
Of self-hatred in him long ago.
I looked at his cuts and bruises
And thoughts of the nights he wrestled
With his thoughts and deeds
He wouldn’t confide nor confess.
As if he was the ant that was
Crushed beneath your boots.
And I wonder, how many other
Were still getting crushed.
Sitting there on that rooftop
With my friend
With stars above my head
And humanity below.
I saw him fall
Fall down in to the darkness.
And I cried as I lost my friend.
And he cried as he lost himself.
